Winogradsky
Column
What is
Winogradsky Column?
The Winogradsky column is a replica of microorganism cultivation introduced by Sergei Winogradsky in the 1880s to explore the growth of microorganisms in a controlled environment.
This column is constructed by combining soil, mud, and water from the environment along with essential macro- and micronutrient sources for microorganism growth.
Subsequently, this column is exposed to sunlight for several weeks or months to allow microorganisms like photosynthetic bacteria to grow.
